Irons in the fire draw moths to a flame hypnotizing promises of glamour and fame.
I have been asked a lot lately what I do for work and the question has always made me uncomfortable. No matter what the answer, my worth seems to be under the spotlight. What I do carries more weight with others than whether or not I am a good husband, father, or citizen. What the question really begs is my contribution to the collective and what socioeconomic status they can surmise.
I have been running in the “start-up” world for the last 5 years and if you are not hustling multiple streams of income you are considered unmotivated… a very dirty word in those circles. But to be honest I’ve been a part of the hustle culture and I left it in pursuit of living a life in alignment with my true purpose. I know there are those out there with more than a singular purpose waiting to be actualized. I am one of those people too. But, for me, I needed to focus on myself for a little while and not the three-ring circus. I needed balance in my life and I wanted to do something that felt more true to my identity.
What’s hustle culture really about? Is it just money, money, money, or unfulfilled voids? Is hustle culture connected with distraction culture and our inability to focus on one thing for longer than 5 minutes? Is there an element of grandeur mixed with self-inflicted mental mutilation?
What do you think of hustle culture? Is it bad for our mental health? Is it a means to an end or a quest for relevance? Is the hustle culture living up to all of its promises?
